Good Friday

View/Download Program

Tonight’s service is a Tenebrae service, a longstanding Holy Week tradition in song and the lighting and extinguishing candles during the three services leading up to Resurrection Sunday.

Readings tonight trace the story of Christ’s passion, the music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and death, we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice and through the return of the small but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, and we anticipate the joy of ultimate victory.

Good Friday marks the death of Jesus Christ.

It is called “good” because of what Jesus’ death means for the redemption of the world.
